Skills to Survive in Today’s News Media Business

The news media industry has evolved considerably in the past decade (even the past five years). The explosion of digital media, growing number of duopolies and changes in the way people consume news have changed the way we operate and cover news. In today’s newsrooms, staff must wear many hats and perform a variety of tasks. Online news websites and social media are becoming a primary way to attract new audiences and share stories.

The Press Club of Toledo will present a panel of local media professionals who will discuss the new skills necessary for new graduates and existing professionals to be successful and remain marketable.

The panelists for this Pressings Issues forum include:

  • Greg Braknis, web news/business editor, The Blade
    • Topic: How to maintain the 24-hour online news cycle
  • Anthony Knopps, news director, Toledo news Now
    • Topic: How roles and responsibilities have expanded in the TV newsroom over the past 5-10 years
  • Alexis Means, reporter, 13abc
    • Topic: How to best utilize digital media in the field
  • Chrys Peterson, consultant, ProMedica
    • Topic: Life after the media and how to make the best use of your “transferrable skills”

Each panelist will speak on a specific topic, followed by Q&A with the audience.
