Pressing Issues: What is a Journalist in the Digital Age?

The forum will be hosted by Toledo Lucas County Public Library, Main Library (325 N. Michigan Street). Moderated by Marlene Harris-Taylor of The Blade, the forum will include presentations by each panelist, as well as Q&A.

What is a Journalist in the Digital Age? 

Today’s digital world provides the opportunity for anyone to become a publisher, whether it is through a personal blog, Twitter account or other social media platform. This availability of information has resulted in people seeking and trusting the information presented from “publishers” without journalism degrees or credentials, which brings up the intriguing question of “what is a journalist in the digital age?”

The Press Club of Toledo’s Pressing Issues forum will provide the opportunity to discuss this current trend of news consumption while highlighting the skills, abilities and responsibilities of a journalist.

Pressing Issues Forums

The Press Club of Toledo’s ‘Pressing Issues’ forums are organized around
topics driven by the news of the day. Panelists representing the newsroom, PR industry and digital communications offer advice surrounding issues in the media and invite audience response.

Forum with Toledo Mayor and Chief of Police

The Press Club of Toledo is pleased to host a Pressing Issues community forum with Toledo Mayor D. Michael Collins and Toledo Chief of Police William Moton. The forum will be held on Friday, May 30, from 8:30-10 a.m., at the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library. It is open to the public and members of the news media.

In this open discussion titled “Building Safer Communities,” Mayor Collins, Chief Moton and other city officials will respond to questions about crime in Toledo, how to establish a neighborhood block watch program and other efforts to increase community safety. There will also be a live demonstration of the Toledo Police Department’s new interactive crime mapping tool.

Admission is $8 for Press Club members and $10 for community members.
