The Press Club of Toledo, its Board of Directors and its members would like to express gratitude to longtime Toledo-Lucas County Public Library Director Clyde Scoles.
We are saddened by Mr. Scoles’ recent passing, and reminded not only of his great library legacy but his ardent support of the Press Club.
The Press Club of Toledo promotes fair and ethical journalism and has done that for many decades. Mr. Scoles has been an impactful part of that effort. Countless Press Club events have been hosted at TLCPL venues citywide with the support of library staff and Mr. Scoles.
“I can’t remember a time when Mr. Scoles said no to collaborating with the Press Club,” said President Chrys Peterson. “Our organization has been strengthened by the venues and resources Mr. Scoles provided to the Press Club over the decades. He was an ardent supporter of the First Amendment and freedom of information for all.”
Over the years, The Press Club of Toledo celebrated Mr. Scoles’ contributions and impact with Touchstone Awards including the Contributor Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award. The Touchstone Awards ceremony was an event he not only attended on a regular basis but supported on a financial basis as well. And Mr. Scoles reinforced his commitment to supporting the next generation of journalists by helping fund the Touchstone Award Scholarships, given to deserving University of Toledo and Bowling Green State University journalism students.
The Press Club would like to offer one final “Thank You” to Mr. Scoles for his support of what the Press Club was, is and will be in the future. We are thriving in part because of his unwavering support.
